The honorable Minister for Education and Sports Janet Kataha Museveni, accompanied by the National Council of Sports board chairman, Dr. Donald Ruakare has flagged off four Uganda Athletes who are set to participate in the 2020 Monaco Diamond League scheduled to take place on 14th August.
The team which includes; Joshua Cheptegei, Halima Nakaayi, Winnie Nanyondo, and Stephen Kissa departed the country on Saturday via a chartered Uganda Airlines flight.
Speaking at the flag-off, World champion Joshua Cheptegei thanked the First Lady, Janet Museveni, and President Museveni for their tremendous support towards sports in the country.
“I thank the first lady and president Museveni for their tremendous support extended towards sports in Uganda. Sport has greatly improved during the NRM era. I am a strong advocate of sports made in Uganda,” Cheptegei said.
“I also want to thank the Honorable Minister Obua, the Ministry, NCS, UOC, and UAF for the great support that has enabled us to travel to Monaco. We will do our best to return home with triumph. I am aiming to break the 5000m world record on Friday next week,” he added.
Janet Museveni also conveyed her positive wishes to the team and advised them to take care of themselves from COVID-19 as well.
“I wish you well. May you excel and make Uganda proud. Please take care and protect yourselves from COVID-19. Remember that self-discipline is a big factor in the fight against this virus. God be with you,” she remarked.
