President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has retained Janet Kataaha Museveni as Minister of Education and Sports and Peter Ogwang as State Minister for Sports in the newly unveiled cabinet for the 2026–2031 term.
The announcement was made on Tuesday, May 26, through the President’s official X account, barely two weeks after he was sworn in for a seventh term on May 12 at Kololo Independence Grounds.
The retention of the Education and Sports leadership is expected to provide continuity at a crucial moment for Uganda’s sports sector, particularly as the country intensifies preparations to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations alongside Kenya and Tanzania under the PAMOJA 2027 arrangement.
President Museveni exercised powers under Articles 108(1) and (2), 108A(1), 111(1), 113(1), and 114(1) of the 1995 Constitution to propose the new cabinet, which includes the Vice President, Prime Minister, Cabinet Ministers, Ministers of State, and Senior Presidential Advisors.
The decision to retain the two ministers is being viewed by sports stakeholders as a move aimed at preserving stability during a demanding phase of Uganda’s AFCON preparations.
Uganda is currently racing against time to complete infrastructure upgrades, meet CAF inspection requirements, and finalise logistics ahead of the continental tournament scheduled for June and July 2027.
Janet Museveni has consistently backed the use of sports as a tool for youth empowerment and national development, while Peter Ogwang has played a visible role in engagements linked to CAF inspections, stadium redevelopment plans, training facilities, and sports funding mobilisation.
The continuity is also expected to help sustain momentum on ongoing projects tied to Uganda’s hosting ambitions, including venue upgrades, fan engagement programmes, and coordination with regional partners Kenya and Tanzania.
