FIFA 2022 World Cup: Two late goals cost Senegal against Netherlands

Netherlands scored two goals inorder to defeat Senegal 2-0 in their FIFA 2022 World Cup Group A opener.

The African champions put up a spirited fight until the last 10 minutes when their defense was breached by Gody Gakpo before conceding a second with arguably the last kick of the game courtesy of Davy Klaassen.

Senegal started the game well and had a couple of chances to find the back of the net, but unluckily they were denied by Andries Noppert, the Dutch debutant goalkeeper.

Noppert pushed away Boulaye Dia’s snapshot before the Dutch goalie also made a brilliant save to deny Idrissa Gana Gueye.

With a game seemly heading to draw, De Jong curled in a brilliant ball from deep and Gakpo made an exquisite run, rose high and nodded ahead of Mendy who had rushed off the line to punch the ball away.

In the later exchanges of the game with Senegal having thrown bodies forward, Netherlands got their second on the break as Memphis Depay found himself one on one with Kalidou Koulibaly to shot. Mendy couldn’t hold the shot and Klaassen converted.

Having lost their first game, Senegal will hope for a better outcome on Friday when they play hosts, Qatar.

Qatar lost their first game to Ecuador 2-0 on Saturday courtesy of Ener Valencia’s brace.
