Senegal secured a place in the Africa Cup of Nations semi-finals with a narrow 1–0 victory over Mali on Friday evening in Tangier.

The decisive moment came in the 27th minute when Iliman Ndiaye capitalised on a costly error by Mali goalkeeper Djigui Diarra, tapping in from close range after the keeper spilled a cross. Senegal dominated possession for much of the first half and looked the sharper side.

Mali’s task became even more difficult just before half-time when captain Yves Bissouma was sent off after receiving a second yellow card.

Despite being reduced to 10 men, Mali showed resilience in the second half and pushed for a late equaliser, but were unable to find a breakthrough.

Diarra later made several fine saves to keep Mali in the contest, but Senegal held on to book a semi-final clash with either Ivory Coast or Egypt.
