StarTimes UPL preview: Express, SC Villa battle for bragging rights in Kampala’s explosive derby

Express FC takes on SC Villa, StarTimes UPL

It will be a day for another rivalry between two of Uganda’s traditional giants, Express FC and Sports Club Villa on Saturday evening as the two sides face in the StarTimes Uganda Premier League at Muteesa II Stadium, Wakulukuku.

Every time that these two clubs face-off, there are egos to settle and often the contest is explosive and too close to predict regardless of current woes and form.

SC Villa comes into this game with every reason to smile after they defeated Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) FC 2-1 in Bombo to put a stop on the Kasasiro Boys’ unbeaten run in the league.

For Express, they will hope to redeem themselves and return to winning ways having blown away a first half lead to draw with a resilient Mbarara City away at the Kakyeka Stadium, in Mbarara.

Villa are 5th on the standings with seven points garnered in four games, while Express are 7th with five points in three games.

Speaking at the press conference on Friday morning, Express FC head coach Wasswa Bbosa said his team has been working on how to convert their chances.

“We got a lot of chances against Mbarara City but we failed to finish them off, so these past few days, we have been working on our finishing. So expect a change against SC Villa,” he said.

“We have also been working so hard on our defense as we have conceded lots of goals this season and I think the return of our captain Enock Walusimbi is a huge boost for us.”

Wasswa Bbosa who has coached both Express and SC Villa anticipates a tough match but says Express will go into the game looking for maximum points since there are home.

“The Kampala derby between Express and SC Villa is the best derby in Uganda with both teams having good players and coaches, but the good thing we are at home on Saturday, so as always, we will come into this game looking to garner maximum points.”

In the previous 14 meetings between the two famous members of VEK, the Jogoos have had an upper hand, having won eight times, whereas, the home side has won only three time.

The Red Eagles last ever win against SC Villa came in 2017 at Wakulukuku and they have gone on to lose four of the previous six meetings between the two sides.

The last 12 league meetings between the two sleeping giants have produced 24 goals with SC Villa having also won the two games last season with a 1-0 scoreline each leg.
