Ddungu: This is the spark Express needed

Derrick Ddungu struggled to put his feelings into words after scoring against KCCA FC on his Express FC debut.

“When I scored, it was blurry. I can’t describe it,” Ddungu said after coming off the bench to seal Express’ 2-0 victory over KCCA at Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo, on Thursday.

It was a dream start for the forward, although the goal carried a bitter-sweet feeling.

“It is unfortunate that I had to score against KCCA, but this is Uganda Premier League,” he said.

Ddungu struck deep in stoppage time to kill off the game after Isaac Wagoina had given Express the lead six minutes into the second half.

The win was a welcome response for the Red Eagles after their opening-day defeat to BUL FC, and Ddungu believes it could be the spark that changes their season.

“After the game against BUL, we were looking for a spark and I think this is it. This is the spark,” he said.

The forward credited his coach, who has worked with him since he was 12, for giving him the chance to make his mark.

“First of all, I would like to thank God for this opportunity. I’d like to thank my coach. He has been with me since I was 12. He started with me and gave me this opportunity.”

His biggest tribute, however, went to his mother, who has supported him from his early days playing in the KKL.

“Ever since I was playing at KKL, she used to take me to the pitch and be there for me, watch me play. She has been here and supported me as well.”

“The emotions are very high. Mom, I love you so much. Thank you for being my mother.”

Ddungu is also encouraged by the spirit inside the Express dressing room, with several new faces joining the squad under a new coach.

“The group is family. I think we’re all brothers in football, and I think that’s what drives us,” he said.

“With a very intelligent, tactical and technical coach in Morley Byekwaso, I believe we’re going to be victorious.”

The target for Ddungu is to help Express win, whether through a goal or an assist.

“First, the team has to win. It doesn’t matter how, but I have to be there, either assist or goal.”
