Days after the World Cup tournament climaxed in Qatar, 26 year old Andre Onana has come out to declare his retirement from international football.
Onana who had asked not to play in Cameroon’s second group stage game against Serbia according to reports from head coach Rigobert Song was suspended from the national team.
In a group, you have to respect the rules, I prefer to preserve the group than the individuals,” said the coach in a press conference after the game.
“We will have time to explain better what it is about, but we must do with those who have the desire and are able to defend the colours of the country,” he added.
In a document written on Friday morning Onana who made his debut in 2016 and went on to collect 34 caps stated that his story with the Cameroonian national team has come to an end,
“Players come and go, names are fleeting, but Cameroon comes before any player or person.
“Cameroon remains eternal, as does my love for the national team and for our people, who have always supported us no matter how difficult the moment was.”
Cameroon finished third in Group G at the 2022 World Cup, a group where only Brazil and Switzerland progressed to the knockout stage.
