Kawempe Muslim Ladies announced themselves on the African stage with a stunning 3-2 victory over defending champions AS FAR Rabat in their opening Group B match at the CAF Women’s Champions League in Cairo, Egypt.

The Ugandan side had to come from behind to claim all three points, with Agnes Nabukenya scoring twice, including a stoppage-time winner, while captain Shakirah Nyinagahirwa was also on target.

AS FAR took control early, with Fatima Tagnaout giving the Moroccan side the lead in the sixth minute through a powerful left-footed effort that beat Josephine Nambuya.

Kawempe struggled to contain the champions in the opening half but came back strongly after the break.

Nabukenya brought the Valley Warriors level in the 53rd minute, beating the AS FAR goalkeeper with a low shot from distance. The momentum was now with the Ugandans, and five minutes later Nyinagahirwa put them ahead, firing home at the near post after getting into the box.

AS FAR were not done yet. Doha El Madani converted a penalty in the 69th minute to bring the scores level at 2-2.

With the match heading towards a draw, Nabukenya had the final say. Latifa Nakasi picked her out with a well-timed pass, and the forward made no mistake, slotting past the goalkeeper to hand Kawempe a memorable win.

The result puts Kawempe in a strong position in Group B after the opening round of matches, although the other group fixture between Ampem Darkoa and USFAS Bamako was still to be played.

Kawempe will now turn their attention to Thursday’s meeting with Ghana’s Ampem Darkoa before facing Mali’s USFAS Bamako in their final group game on Sunday.

For the Valley Warriors, beating the defending champions on their tournament debut is a huge start and gives them real belief heading into their remaining fixtures.
