Uganda’s FC Kitara bowed out of the TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup after suffering a 4-0 defeat to Egyptian giants Al Ahly on Sunday at the Cairo International Stadium.

The result saw Al Ahly complete a 6-1 aggregate victory and book their place in the group stage, with the draw set for Wednesday.

Kitara had gone into the return leg hoping to overturn a 2-1 first-leg deficit from Hoima, but the Egyptian side quickly showed why they remain one of the continent’s biggest clubs.

Hussein El Shahat broke the deadlock in the 38th minute after capitalising on a mistake by Kitara goalkeeper Joel Mutakubwa. The Al Ahly forward spotted the goalkeeper off his line and lifted the ball over him and into the net.

The hosts doubled their advantage just before the break when Mohamed Magdi Afsha finished from close range after Taher Mohamed won possession from Kitara’s defence.

El Shahat struck again seven minutes after the restart, firing a powerful effort from inside the box to make it 3-0 on the night.

Al Ahly added a fourth in the 67th minute when Taher headed home from close range following a cross from substitute Ahmed Eid.

The result ended Kitara’s continental campaign at the second preliminary-round stage, while Al Ahly advanced comfortably into the group stage.

For Kitara, the campaign provided valuable experience on the continental stage, but they were ultimately unable to withstand the quality of the Egyptian giants across the two legs.
