Tonny Mawejje is back on the touchline. The former Uganda Cranes midfielder has been appointed head coach of Muteesa I Royal University as the Royal Lions begin preparations to defend their University Football League title.
Mawejje was unveiled alongside his technical team at the university premises in Kilumba, Masaka, on Wednesday.
He takes over a team that enters the new season with a target on its back after winning its first ever University Football League title last season.
The Royal Lions edged YMCA 1-0 in the final at Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo, in May to complete a memorable campaign under George William Ssengabi.
Ssengabi has now made way for Mawejje, who retired from playing in 2022 and has since been steadily building his coaching career.
The former international has already had stints with Wakiso Giants, Kampala Queens and St. Noa Girls.
“Welcome Tonny Mawejje as our new head coach. A true legend of the game, bringing a wealth of experience, passion, and tactical brilliance to lead the squad into this exciting new chapter,” the university said in a statement.
Mawejje also remains active in football away from the training ground, working as a pundit on FUFA TV, particularly during Uganda Premier League matches.
Now, his focus shifts back to the dugout, where he faces the task of keeping the Royal Lions at the top.
He will work with Masaka LC goalkeeper Ashadu Bugembe, who joins the technical team as goalkeeping coach.
