Uganda’s long-distance runner Joshua Cheptegei has been voted the winner of the 2019 USPA Fans choice award.
The category that was introduced last year saw Cheptegei win the accolade and the exercise was conducted online.
The sports journalists’ umbrella body confirmed Cheptegei as the winner on Tuesday with just a few moments to the official USPA gala.
Cheptegei got 70% of the fans votes, 800m World Athletics champion Halima Nakaayi came second with 29% while Uganda Cranes forward Emmanuel Okwi got 1% of the votes.
Joshua Cheptegei put up stellar performances from the beginning of last year (2019), breaking four records in less than a year. He first broke the 10km road world record in Valencia in December which had lasted for over 10 years .
He also went ahead for another record in February when he ran 12 minutes 51 seconds to break the 5km road world record in Monaco before returning to the same City in August to claim Bekele records, a 16-year-standing world record in the 5000m race by nearly two seconds.
In October this year, the 25-year old broke another of Bekele’s records, a 15-year-long standing world record in the 10,000m race by nearly 6.6 seconds, at the NN Valencia WR Day in Spain.
