Shortly after breaking Kenenisa Bekele’s 15-year-old standing 10,000m world record at the NN Valencia WR day in Spain on Wednesday evening, Ugandan athlete Joshua Cheptegei says smashing that record is just a dream come true for him.

The 24-year old clocked 26:11.02 to break the previous record set by Bekele in Brussels by only 6.52 seconds.

“It was my dream. We are trying to write history on the track and make people know that track is still exciting,” Cheptegei told Olympics channel after smashing the record.

He also promised more to come in the next few years

“I think this is just the foundation of what I want to achieve in years to come.”

This is the fourth record Cheptegei has broken in less than a year after breaking the 10km road record in Valencia and 5km road and 5000m world records in Monaco.
