The East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) Ltd., in partnership with the Buganda Kingdom, has officially launched the construction of the Kabaka Daudi Chwa II EACOP Stadium in Buddu County, Masaka City, marking a significant investment in youth empowerment and community development.
The groundbreaking ceremony brought together leaders from EACOP, the Buganda Kingdom, local government, and community members to witness the start of a project expected to transform sports development in the greater Masaka region.
The stadium is being constructed under EACOP’s Social and Economic Investment (SEI) programme, specifically through its Youth Empowerment pillar, which seeks to improve the social and economic wellbeing of communities located along the East African Crude Oil Pipeline corridor.
As part of the partnership, the Buganda Kingdom has allocated 10 acres of land for the development of the modern community sports facility, while EACOP has provided financial support for the construction. Once completed, the stadium is expected to nurture sporting talent, promote healthy lifestyles, and serve as a centre for community engagement and unity.
Speaking during the ceremony, EACOP Deputy Managing Director, Mr. JB Habumugisha, said the project demonstrates the company’s commitment to creating lasting value beyond the pipeline itself.
“This groundbreaking ceremony reflects our long-term commitment to advancing sustainability and socio-economic development. By supporting this sports centre, we are investing in an initiative that will deliver lasting value for the communities in which we operate,” Habumugisha said.
The Katikkiro of Buganda, Owek. Charles Peter Mayiga, welcomed the partnership, describing it as an important step towards addressing the needs of young people across the Kingdom.
“The Kingdom cherishes collaborations that address critical needs such as youth empowerment. Through the Kabaka Daudi Chwa II EACOP Stadium Buddu, we are happy to work with EACOP to create a legacy of resilience, opportunity and growth for our people,” Mayiga said.
The project reflects a shared commitment by EACOP and the Buganda Kingdom to strengthen community development through investments that leave a lasting social impact.
According to EACOP, the Ugandan section of the pipeline spans 296 kilometres across 10 districts and 25 sub-counties. Seven of these districts are within the Buganda Kingdom, covering 130 villages across four of the Kingdom’s 18 counties. These include Gomba (Gomba County), Kyankwanzi (Singo County), Mubende (Buwekula County), Sembabule (Mawogola County), and the districts of Lwengo, Kyotera and Rakai, all located within Buddu County.
Leaders at the ceremony said the stadium will not only provide a modern sporting facility but will also create opportunities for talent development, recreation and social interaction for generations to come. They expressed confidence that the partnership would contribute to sustainable regional development while strengthening the long-standing relationship between EACOP and the Buganda Kingdom.
Once completed, the Kabaka Daudi Chwa II EACOP Stadium is expected to become a landmark sports facility for Masaka City and the wider Buddu region, offering young people a platform to develop their talents while fostering unity, inclusion and community pride.
