CAF Champions League: Simba hand Vipers third loss

Uganda Premier League champions Vipers SC suffered their third CAF Champions League group stages loss after losing 1-0 to Simba SC at the Benjamin Mkapa National Stadium on Tuesday.

Clatous Chama scored the all important goal for the Tanzanian side, who have now completed a double over the Venoms in group C.

Chama’s goal came at the stroke of halftime after Yunus Sentamu lost possession to a Tanzanian player in the mid of the pitch for the Simba forward to find himself in a very nice position. Chama calmly beat off Livingstone Mulondo with ease before slotting past Vipers goalkeeper Alfred Mudekereza.

Simba were the better side of the day as they created the most of the goalscoring chances of the game, but were occasionally denied by Mudekereza.

The Congolese goalkeeper brilliantly denied Pape Sakho as early as third minute before doing the same to Saidi Ntibazonkiza and Moses Phiri’s efforts in the opening half.

Later on in the closing half, Mudekereza denied both Jean Baleke and Chama to ensure Vipers never conceded a second.

The Venoms will feel like they would have returned to Kampala with atleast a point as Sentamu’s goal, just after restart, was wrongly flagged off for offside while substitute Aboubakar Lawal missed a glorious chance to get a late equaliser at almost the death when he back-heel was weak to beat Simba’s Anisha Manula.

With their third loss in four games, Vipers remain bottom of group C with just a point to show.

For Simba, they move to second place on six points( both collected from Vipers) with just two games left to play.

Vipers will play Raja Casablanca next before traveling for an away tie to Horoya.
