Vipers Soccer Club has become the second Ugandan side to qualify for the group stages of the lucrative CAF Champions League.
This is after they secured a hard fought 4-2 victory over TP Mazembe in spotkicks on Saturday evening after a nil-nil scoreline after two legs.
The first leg in Uganda last weekend ended nil-nil, same like the second leg which was played under sunny conditions in Congo.
Bright Anukani, Disan Galiwago, Ashraf Mandela and Osomba Olivier converted Vipers spotkicks while Likonza Glody and Tandi Mwape missed TP Mazembe’s kicks.
Before the kicks though, Vipers put into a spirited performance throughout the 90 -both defensively and offensively.
They had a couple of chances to go ahead in the opening half, but Milton Karisa failed to connect well with a brilliant Yunus cross before Abdu Lumala rattled the crossbar just before halftime.
Vipers were at most times on the receiving end in the closing half, but their defense remained calm and composed to stop all the attacks Mazembe imposed on them.
Vipers now becomes the second Ugandan Club to make the CAF Champions League group stages grade. The first one was KCCA when they made the group stages in 2018.
