Rugby Cranes coach Fred Mudoola has unveiled a 28-man squad for the eagerly anticipated Victoria Cup 2023 which is set to start on Saturday 28th October at the King Park Arena in Bweyogerere.Â
This Rugby showpiece derives its name from the iconic Lake Victoria and the majestic Victoria Falls, is a historical tournament with deep-rooted rugby traditions.
Originally contested by 3 nations, Kenya, Uganda, and Zimbabwe, the tournament marks its triumphant return after a hiatus since 2019 when it was secured by Zimbabwe who won’t be able to defend their trophy and their place for this year’s edition will be filled with Zambia.
Besides a chance for Uganda to improve its world rankings, the tournament will be the genesis of an ambitious vision by the Union to construct a formidable XVs team within the next eight years, with a clear goal of building a strong national rugby team capable of international excellence.
These plans were unveiled by the Union CEO Isaac Lutwama during the Victoria cup launch.
The 28-man squad, under the captaincy of Ivan Magomu and vice-captains Byron Oketayot and Conrad Wanyama, includes a blend of experienced players and promising talents.
The named squad is as follows:
Odugo Faragi, Bwambale Nathan, Jjuuko Jude, Senteza Santos, Kabagambe Ivan, Kimbowa Collins, Kivumbi Saul, Uhuru Charles, Aziku Robert, Emong Eliphaz, Chisano Joaquim, Omoding Mark, Gongodyo Sydney, Kidega Frank, Kato Nicholas, Walker Liam, Mula Eric, Gwokto Thomas, Manano Alhaji, Wokorach Micheal, Kisiga Timothy, Oyet Joseph, Ssembusi Shakim, Ochen Jacob, Asuman Mugerwa, Byron Oketayot (VC), Conrad Wanyama (VC).
Hosts Uganda will kick off agaisnt Zambia in the opener on 28th October, 2023. Kyadondo Rugby grounds will see one game between Kenya and Zambia on 1st November, 2023 and back at kings Park for a dream climax between Uganda and Kenya on 5th November, 2023.Â
A game which will also serve as a first leg of the Elgon Cup which awaits return 6days later in Kisumu, Kenya on 11th November, 2023.
