Uganda Women badminton team scoops silver in Egypt


2024 Thomas and Uber team events climaxed when with Uganda women’s team coming back home with silver medal.

The Championships saw South Africa win gold at the events that tossed off on 12th this month in Cairo.

Out of the Eight nations in Egypt, Uganda reached the finals of the championships with no loss after defeating Nigeria, host nation Egypt and Algeria.

However Uganda fell short in the final, losing 3-2.

In the individuals, Husina Kobugabe came out victorious when she defeated South Africa’s Diane Olivier (4-21 10-21).

Just like Kobugabe, Gladys Mbabazi with  (18-21, 17-21) won against Deidre Laurens.

For Africa’s number one, Shamika Fadilah, she played third women’s singles which was a do-or-die for both parties however she lost (21-11 21-14) against Africa’s number two Johanita Scholtz.

For South Africa, they were dominant in both the women’s doubles, Amy Ackerman and Deidre Laurens defeating Uganda’s Gladys Mbabazi and Husina Kobugabe (21-14 21-15).

In the final game of the day, Fadilah Shamika Mohamed Rafi and Tracy Naluwooza were humbled by SouthAfrican pair Megan De Bee and Johanita Scholtz (21-13 21-18).

Uganda replicated their 2022 performance when they won Silver in the women’s team but disappointment kicked in after Uganda men’s team lost all its games.

The players will continue to take part in other upcoming events like Uganda International, Germany Open, All Africa Games, Orleans Master, and Swiss Open with intention to collect more points.
