Uganda’s Fadilah Shamika Mohammed Rafi delivered a historic performance at the All Africa Badminton Senior Championships in Gaborone, clinching gold in the women’s singles and adding a bronze medal in women’s doubles alongside Tracy Naluwooza.
On Sunday, February 15, 2026, the 22-year-old Shamika defeated South Africa’s Johanita Scholtz in a thrilling three-set final (21-17, 16-21, 21-19) to secure Uganda’s second gold medal at the championship. The victory made her the first Ugandan woman to win two gold medals at the continental showpiece.
“I’m grateful because I didn’t have much time to prepare,” Shamika said after the match, thanking her father for motivating her through the tough final.
In the women’s doubles semifinals, Shamika and Naluwooza fell 2-0 (21-16, 21-10) to South Africa’s Amy Ackerman and Johanita Scholtz, settling for bronze.
Uganda was represented by 10 players under coach Frank Muwuluzi, though most were eliminated in earlier rounds and the team missed out on the team events due to travel challenges.
Attention now turns to the Uganda International Challenge, due February 18–22 at the MTN Arena Lugogo in Kampala, where over 40 countries are expected to compete.
