The Uganda U-20 Women’s National Football Team has surrendered a two-goal lead to lose 3-2 to Ethiopia in their final match of this year’s CECAFA U-20 Women’s Championship.

This result means Uganda has lost the Championship to Ethiopia who finish top of table with 15 points in 5 games, three points ahead of the Crested Cranes.

Ethiopia had to play for the most part of the game a player less after their custodian was sent off for a foul on Fauzia Najjemba in the 6th minute.

Haddijah Nandago and Fauzia Najjemba put Uganda ahead in the first half, but the 10-women Ethiopians returned for the closing half a different team and scored thrice to win 3-2, including scoring twice in the last 12 minutes.

Rediet Assrasahang pulled a goal back for Ethiopia early in the second half before Ariet Odong and Tigist Haile completed the comeback victory for Ethiopia late on in the game to win the  championship.

Uganda took an early lead in the game as early as the 25th minute with a goal from Hadijah Nandago as team Uganda dominated the first stanza of the game.

Captain Fauzia Najjemba scored from a long range free kick in the 40th minute of the game to put Uganda in a comfortable 2-0 lead as her shot pounced off the keeper in an acrobatic style to find the back of the net.

Uganda went into the half time break with a two goal advantage against the Ethiopians.

In the second stanza of the game the Ethiopians played together as a team with a man down forcing Uganda to defend from deep hence forcing mistakes in Ugandas defence.

In the 51st minute of the game Ridet Assrasahang scored to pull a goal back for the Ethiopians.

A brilliant performance from Ariet Odongo on the left hand side was awarded by a goal in the 78th minute to draw the game level on 2-2 score.

Just five minutes to stoppage time a 2-2 draw would mean that team Uganda walk away with the trophy on goal difference but Ariet Odongo had other options as she beat the Ugandan defence just to set up Turist Lema for the third goal for Ethiopia in the 85th minute.

A 3-2 win for Ethiopia ensured that they maintain a 100% winning record after they had five wins from the five games to be crowned champions of the inaugural tournament.

Uganda who lost just a single game in the championship, against champions Ethiopia settled for second place with 12 points, just enough to seal the silver medal. Tanzanian received the bronze medal for finishing 3rd on 9points.
