Uganda’s national Under-20 side, the Hippos, produced a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Sudan in their Group B clash of the CECAFA U-20 Championship at Uhuru Stadium on Saturday, 19 September 2026, to advance to the semi-finals.
The decisive moment arrived in the 71st minute through super-substitute Amour Munogera. The Vipers Sports Club Attacking Midfielder, introduced just three minutes earlier, timed his run perfectly to beat the offside trap and coolly slot the ball past Sudan goalkeeper Mustafa Mohamed Elgadal Fahoud.
Until that point the contest had been tightly balanced. Both teams pushed numbers forward in an open first half that ended goalless. Sudan’s clearest opportunity came in the 35th minute when forward Galal Omer tested Uganda goalkeeper Adrian Isabirye with a firm strike. Three minutes later, Sudan captain Waheed Shandi embarked on a dangerous solo run that was expertly halted by defender Gilbert Ogenrwot.
Uganda almost broke the deadlock on the stroke of half-time. Derrick Ssozi found Isima Magala in a promising position, but the striker failed to convert from close range.
At the start of the second half, coach Kingston Laryea introduced Steven Oyirwoth for Yashir Mimosa. Sudan continued to threaten, with Ogenrwot again producing a vital block to deny Wail Galal Omer Alnour in the 52nd minute.
The visitors made a double change on the hour mark, while Uganda responded in the 67th minute by bringing on Munogera for Genesis Ocen Odiya and Joseph Ssendyowa for captain Richard Okello. Munogera needed only three minutes to make his mark.
Sudan lost captain Elbadri to injury with a quarter of an hour remaining, forcing another substitution. Uganda defended their slender lead with determination, making late changes of their own as Simon Wanyama and Ashraf Kyakuwa entered the fray.
In the other early Group C fixture, Kenya and South Sudan shared the points in a 1-1 draw.
