Uganda coach Tolbert Onyango and his Uganda Rugby Sevens charges are in Santiago, Chile getting ready for the 2023 HSBC World Rugby Sevens Challenger series.
The Sevens team finished tenth (10th) at their recently concluded 2022 edition of the Commonwealth games in Birmingham, England.
Despite finishing tenth, the team had an improved show in Birmingham compared to that in the 2018 Commonwealth in Gold Coast drawing with World beaters Australia and winning comfortably against Jamaica 27-5, something that gives the team confidence heading into the tournament.
Speaking to the 2023 HSBC World Rugby Seven Series media team, Onyango talks of qualification for the Series as not only being the culmination of five years’ hard work but also a “change for everything” for the aspiring male sevens players in Uganda.
It would create a pathway for the young players who are picking up the sport
[It would] show them that even if you pick up the sport locally you can go and play internationally and be recognised for your efforts.
