Uganda’s Commonwealth Games contingent has received a morale boost from Uganda Olympic Committee partner Tooke Processing ahead of their departure for Scotland.
Speaking during the farewell ceremony for the boxing, netball, judo and swimming teams, Bombers captain Nuhu Batte expressed confidence in the country’s medal prospects.
“We are ready to represent our country and we are looking forward to winning gold medals,” Batte said.
The boxer, who will be making his Commonwealth Games debut, is relishing the opportunity to compete outside Africa for the first time.
“As an athlete, I am happy to be competing outside Africa for the first time and I am determined to return home with a medal,” he added.
Boxing has traditionally been one of Uganda’s strongest disciplines at the Commonwealth Games, contributing significantly to the country’s medal tally over the years. Expectations are once again high that the Bombers can deliver medals in Scotland.
She Cranes player Gloria Aya also expressed optimism about the national netball team’s chances.
“We are going with the aim of finishing among the top three and we are determined to achieve that. Individually, this is also a great opportunity for players to showcase themselves to the world,” Aya said.
The She Cranes have previously battled for sixth place at the Games, and a top-three finish would secure their first-ever Commonwealth Games medal since making their debut in 2018.
Judoka Zubeda Talikaza, who is also set for her maiden appearance at the Games, said representing Uganda on such a stage is a dream come true.
“I am happy to have been selected to represent Uganda for the first time and I will do my best to make my country proud,” Talikaza noted.
The latest batch of athletes joins the first delegation that departed on July 17. The team is headed by Moses Mwase, who leads the swimming delegation and serves as deputy head of mission, alongside Sarah Chelangat from the National Council of Sports.
