Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) FC striker Cromwell Rwothomio and Shafik Kagimu were on target on Tuesday evening as the Tax Collectors outclassed Police FC 2-0 at home in a StarTimes Uganda Premier League game played at the MTN Omondi Stadium, Lugogo
Kagimu broke the deadlock in the first half after a series of failed clearances by the Police defenders, while Rwothomio raced past Henry Katongole and Denis Rukundo to complete the scoring for the visitors in the second half.
In an end-to-end first half of the game, Police FC started the brightest and almost scored from their first opportunity at goal in the 13th minute but Hannington Ssebwalunyo made a brilliant save to first deny Johnson Odong before collecting Edward Kiryowa’s rebound with ease.
A minute on, the visitors, attempted a retaliation, but Kagimu failed to connect well with an excellent Ssali Davis cross from right.
From a break at the quarter-hour mark, Odong found himself in a one-on-one with Brian Majwega who he dribbled past but was just unable to break the deadlock, shooting way wide from the target.
The tax collectors took the lead through Shafik Kagimu in the 25th minute who reacted to a poor Tony Mawejje interception to squeeze his effort past Tom Ikara into the left bottom corner.
Steven Mukwala wasted a wonderful chance to double his side’s tally when Ashraf Mandela’s cross found him unmarked at the far post but, he miskicked and skyed the ball over the goal-mouth.
Just before the halftime break, Kagimu came close to handing his side a second, but his bullet effort went agnozingly meters wide of the upright.
The Cops almost levelled matters after the break, but Ssebwalunyo parried Hassan Mahmood’s freekick to a corner kick
Three minutes later, URA had a penalty appeal waved away by Waiswa Muzamir after Cromwell Rwothomio was fouled in the penalty area by Police FC custodian Thomas Ikara, but it was Ikara who came off worse with a shoulder injury leading to his substitution that saw the introduction of former Vipers goalkeeper, Derrick Ochan.
Just past the hour mark, Mandela denied Police an equaliser, making a goal-line clearance to stop Odong’s effort after a Ssebwalunyo howler.
The Tax Collectors finally doubled their advantage through Rwothomio when he connected with Kagimu’s defence-splitting pass, racing past Henry Katongole and Denis Rukundo to slot home for URA’s second.
Odong was unlucky not to have pulled a goal back for the Cops in the 78th minute when he flicked the ball off a well-driven Mahmood freekick which rattled the crossbar with the Ssebwalunnyo well beaten.
URA now ascend to the top of StarTimes UPL standings with 30 points garnered in 13 games, surpassing Express FC who lost to UPDF in Bombo, while Police remain with 24 points and move a step down to fifth on the log after KCCA defeated Kyetume FC at Njeru.
Elsewhere, Living Kabon’s 74th-minute penalty was enough to see Onduparaka past Mbarara City in Arua.
