Stanbic Uganda Cup: Vipers becomes first team to progress for quarter-finals


Vipers SC became the first team to qualify for the quarter-finals of the Stanbic Uganda Cup after their drew 1-all with UPDF FC at the St. Mary’s Stadium, Kitende on Monday 

Bobosi Byaruhanga scored directly from the corner to ensure the Venoms progressed to the next stage after a 4-2 aggregate win over the Army side. Vipers had won the first leg 3-1 at the Bombo Military Playgrounds.

Having held a two goals advantage coming into the second leg, Vipers started the game the brightest and had the ball into the back of net but Manzoki’s effort was flagged off for an offside early on in the game.

From their first corner of the game, UPDF surprising took the lead through Bright Vuni, who rose high to head in a Isa Mubiru’s kick with nine minutes on the clock.

Vipers levelled matters with a moment of brilliance after Bobosi Byaruhanga netted directly from a corner kick midway the first half for his first goal at the St. Mary’s Stadium this season.

Just before the break, UPDF had a chance to restore parity but Charles Ssebutinde puts his effort straight to Fabien Mutombora in the Vipers goal.

The best chance of the second half fell to Jamil Kalisa, but the former Soltilo Bright Stars midfielder shot narrowly wide off UPDF’s goal with Kibowa helpless.

Action will continue on Tuesday, 4th May with second leg dues at 3 different venues.
