Forward Brian Ssali scored the only goal of the game at the Bombo Military playground on Monday evening to handed Big league side Ndejje University a first-leg advantage over nine-time champions SC Villa.
Ssali was on scored for the visitors in the 38th minute of the game off a wonderful cross from George Akena to propel his side to a hard-fought 1-0 victory over the home side, Villa.
Ndejje dominated the opening minutes of the game but were just unable to increase their advantage from the few chances they registered and it was only in the 38th minute when Ssali Brian broke the deadlock. He rose up high in the air and nodded in off a brilliant George Akena cross from the right.
Moments later just before the break, Nicholas Luzige missed a chance to double Ndejje’s lead bundling his effort just above the crossbar to the mercy of Villa’s goalie Keni who had moved off his goal-line.
The game went into the halftime break with the visitors deservingly in the lead over the awful Jogoos.
After a poor show in the first half, the Jogoos returned for the second half a better side but failed to utilize the few realistic chances they registered.
It was Ndejje University who still looked the better going forward than the Jogoos in the second half and could have scored the second in the 62nd minute. However, Keni made a brilliant save to deny Jimmy Wasswa who was well placed to score after an excellent cross by scorer Ssali.
In the 65th minute, Luzige was given his marching orders by referee Ali Sabila for a second bookable offence.
Villa tried their level best to force an equaliser in the final ten minutes but the Ndejje defense was rock solid to deny any late drama from the hosts.
The two sides face off for the second leg on Sunday at the Arena of Visions in Ndejje University.
For Villa to progress to the next round of the Uganda Cup, they will need to humble University Lions by a two goals margin.
