St Lawrence University claimed a narrow 2-1 victory over Ndejje University in the first leg of the Pepsi University Football League quarterfinals at Kavule, taking a slim but important advantage into the return fixture.

In a match that echoed last season’s quarterfinal meeting also won 2-1 by St Lawrence at the same venue both sides began cautiously, locked in a tense midfield battle. The hosts relied on long balls to stretch play, while Ndejje gradually settled and built from the back.

The deadlock was broken in the 21st minute when Ziraba Ronnie headed home Mukiibi Sharafah’s precise delivery. However, the lead lasted just two minutes, as Musinguzi Davis equalized for Ndejje with a composed finish after being set up by Joel Olupot.

Level at halftime, St Lawrence returned with greater purpose. Their pressure paid off in the 62nd minute when Sharafah turned scorer, heading in Ivan Okello’s cross to restore the hosts’ lead.

St Lawrence nearly extended their advantage late on, with Sharafah striking the woodwork and Okello denied by a fine save from goalkeeper Ocen Fred. Ndejje pushed for another equalizer in the closing stages, but could not break through.

The result leaves St Lawrence University with a slender edge ahead of the second leg, while Ndejje University still have everything to play for in what promises to be a decisive return encounter.
