Uganda Rugby Cranes and Stanbic Black Pirates player Sydney Gongodyo has died, sending shockwaves through the country’s rugby fraternity.
The tragic news was confirmed on Friday by both the Uganda Rugby Union and Stanbic Black Pirates, with tributes pouring in for one of Uganda’s most promising rugby talents.
In a heartfelt message shared on social media, the Pirates paid tribute to their fallen teammate.
“A sea robber to the bone has sailed his sail. No more sea billows for him. Till we meet again Sydney,” the club posted.
According to reports circulating within the rugby community, Gongodyo is suspected to have been a victim of mob justice following an incident in the Bukoto area. However, the exact circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear, and authorities had not issued an official statement by the time of publication.
The development comes as a devastating blow to Stanbic Black Pirates, who are preparing for their Rugby Premiership playoff semifinal clash against Heathens on Sunday at Kyadondo Rugby Club. Gongodyo had been featured prominently on the club’s promotional material for the fixture and was expected to play a key role in the contest.
His death comes barely a week after he represented Stanbic Black Pirates in the Enterprise Cup final against Kabras Sugar Rugby Club at the RFUEA Grounds in Nairobi, Kenya. The match brought together two of East Africa’s rugby powerhouses, with Gongodyo once again demonstrating his value to the Pirates on the regional stage.
A powerful and versatile player, Gongodyo was instrumental in Pirates’ historic 2025 season, helping the club secure both the Uganda Rugby Premiership title and the Uganda Cup. His performances also earned him recognition at the national level, where he featured for the Uganda Rugby Cranes.
The sudden loss has left teammates, opponents, supporters and the wider sporting community in mourning.
