Kataka’s destiny is finally in their own hands.
The Mbale-based side head into the final day of the 2025/26 FUFA Big League season on Saturday knowing that victory away to Soltilo Bright Stars will secure a long-awaited return to the Uganda Premier League and end a promotion quest that has stretched for more than a decade.
For a club that has endured years of heartbreak, near misses and frustration, the equation could not be simpler. Kataka occupy the final promotion slot and only need three points in Bugolobi to complete the job. Anything less could open the door for Paidha Black Angels, who sit just one point behind and are ready to capitalize on any slip-up.
The journey has been anything but straightforward. At one stage of the campaign, Kataka dropped out of the promotion places and looked destined for another season of disappointment. However, a strong finish to the season, capped by a crucial 2-0 victory over already-promoted Kigezi Homeboyz in Mbale, revived their hopes and ensured they would carry their fate into the final matchday.
Yet memories of the past remain fresh.
In the 2021/22 season, Kataka entered the final day at the summit of the FUFA Big League standings but suffered a devastating 3-2 defeat to Kyetume in Mbale. What appeared to be a certain promotion dream quickly turned into heartbreak as the club slipped out of the promotion places by a single point. The disappointment was compounded by sanctions following crowd trouble after the match, leaving scars that have lingered for years.
Head coach Godfrey “Toldo” Awachango and his players now have an opportunity to finally put those painful memories behind them.
However, the challenge awaiting them is far from easy.
Bright Stars are fighting a battle of their own. Relegated from the Uganda Premier League in 2025 after a 12-year stay in the top flight, the Luzira-based side are desperate to avoid another drop. Sitting just above the relegation zone, they also need a positive result to secure their status, setting the stage for a high-stakes encounter with everything on the line for both teams.
Elsewhere, Paidha Black Angels will be closely monitoring events as they take on Nebbi Central in a crucial West Nile derby. A Kataka slip coupled with a Paidha victory could dramatically alter the promotion picture.
For Kataka, though, the mission is simple: win and make every other result irrelevant.
After years of rebuilding, heartbreak and perseverance, the club stands just 90 minutes away from ending one of the longest promotion waits in Ugandan football. The question now is whether they can finally seize the moment and write the chapter their supporters have been dreaming about for years.
