Uganda Cranes’ planned international friendly matches against Tanzania and Madagascar have been cancelled despite the team already being in Morocco ahead of the June FIFA international window.

The Cranes had travelled to Marrakech earlier this week and were set to face Tanzania on June 5 before taking on Madagascar on June 8 as part of preparations for the AFCON PAMOJA 2027 qualifying campaign.

However, the matches were called off following a communication from authorities through the designated match agents.

In a statement, FUFA confirmed:

The two International Friendly matches against Tanzania and Madagascar have been cancelled due to sanitary and public health considerations as communicated by authorities through our match agents.”

The cancellation is a major setback for head coach Paul Put, who had named a 28-man squad featuring a blend of experienced internationals and emerging talents, including 14 Uganda Premier League players.

Before the team’s departure, Put had highlighted the importance of the fixtures in assessing the squad ahead of the AFCON 2027 qualifiers.

“I think these will be two good games to test where we are as a team. Qualifiers for AFCON 2027 start soon in September, October and November, so we need to be prepared,” the Belgian tactician said.

The friendlies were also expected to provide opportunities for several new faces and locally-based players who had impressed during the recently concluded domestic season.
