Kyaggwe made history by lifting their maiden Buganda Masaza Cup trophy after edging record champions Gomba 1-0 in a thrilling final played at Muteesa II Stadium, Wankulukuku, on Saturday, October 31, in the presence of His Majesty the Kabaka of Buganda, Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II.

Second-half substitute George Kato emerged as the hero, scoring the decisive goal in the 76th minute to send Kyaggwe supporters into wild celebrations and crown their impressive campaign with a historic victory.

The triumph ended Kyaggwe’s long wait for their first Masaza Cup title, 22 years after the competition was revived in 2004. It also marked redemption for the county, which had lost the 2024 final to Buddu.

For Gomba, the defeat ended their hopes of securing a sixth title, having entered the final as five-time champions. The two sides had earlier played out identical 1-1 draws in their league meetings at Kabulasoke in July and August, but Kyaggwe finally found the breakthrough when it mattered most.

After Kato’s late strike, coach Ronald Ssali’s charges remained disciplined to protect their advantage until the final whistle, before their captain received the coveted trophy from the Kabaka.

Speaking after the final, Kansai Plascon Uganda Head of Marketing Daniel Kayongo congratulated Kyaggwe on their historic achievement while commending Gomba for their spirited performance.

“Congratulations to Kyaggwe on bringing the cup home for the first time, and to Gomba for a final that was in the balance until late in the game. We thank His Majesty the Kabaka for gracing the occasion and presenting the trophy,” Kayongo said.

Kayongo reaffirmed Plascon’s commitment to supporting the Masaza Cup, highlighting the tournament’s role in providing talented players with a platform to showcase their abilities and create lasting memories for their communities.

“At Plascon, we support the Masaza Cup because it gives players a chance to do something their whole county will remember. Kato came off the bench today, and his goal is the one Kyaggwe supporters will talk about for years,” he added.

Masaza Cup Trophy

Plascon’s association with the Masaza Cup dates back to 2023. In addition to sponsoring Buddu FC, the company has supported the wider tournament for four seasons, helping promote grassroots football and nurture talent across Buganda’s 18 counties.

Kyaggwe were rewarded with Shs25 million and gold medals for their triumph, while their player Godfrey Arijole was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.

Gomba received Shs22 million and silver medals as runners-up, with Meddie Kasule claiming the Golden Boot after finishing as the competition’s leading scorer with six goals. Mawogola’s Herbert Masaba was named Best Goalkeeper.

Earlier, Butambala secured third place after defeating Bugerere 1-0 in the classification match. Dathan Mubiru scored the decisive goal in the 82nd minute to earn Butambala the bronze medals.

Butambala also received the Fair Play Award and Most Improved Team accolade, while Bugerere’s Owek. Samuel Ssemugoma was recognised as the Ssaza chief who attended the most matches.
