- Makerere University 1-0 Victoria University
Muteganga Frank scored the only goal of the game as hosts Makerere University edged Victoria University 1-0 in their 2024/25 Pepsi University Football League campaign opening fixture on Thursday evening.
The goal came in opening half just seventeen (17) minutes onto through a headed Muteganga effort from Wasswa Herbert’s well taken free kick.
Despite having a poor start to the game, that forced shot stopper Joel Wejuli into action after just a minute into the game with an effort from Reagan Mugerwa who was through on goal after a great ball from Lubwama Derrick.
However after scoring, the energy shifted to the hosts side and a string pressure piled onto Victoria University.
In the 28th minute a beautiful counter attack was sighted as the ball was played into Makerere’s Wasswa on the right wing who played a low cross into the area only for Male Musa to play out clever dummy but Victoria University goal keeper Yusuf Nfumu was well positioned to clear the danger.
Six (6) minutes later, Captain Okwong Emmanuel managed to turn out of trouble to drives forward with purpose to plays in Cosmos Osuna, but the midfielder dragged the ball wide when the chance opened up to shoot.
Five minutes to the break, midfielder Nyombi Jonathan took on the hosts defence to cut inside before feeding Mugwera Reagan who overhit his effort to fly over the top, an action that summarized Victoria University’s half.
Into the second stanza, Wasswa tried to brilliantly weave his way through the midfield before releasing forward Humphrey Amabe down the right who put in a low ball to Okwong for first time strike which went off target Ten minutes after restart.
With 25 left on the clock, Victoria‘s Reagan Mugwera and Derrick Lubwama combined only to square a low pass to Ashiraf Mutebi who saw his shot elevate over the cross bar.
Makerere University continued with their dominance as Male Musa put the ball across the face of goal only to result into a goalmouth scramble but shot stopper Nfumu managed to clear the danger once again, quater a hour to close the game.
With five left to the 90th minute mark, Ddungu Nicholas managed to cut in off the left flank only to cross for the arriving Okwong in the box, but this time the midfielder could quite stretch far enough only for the ball to flash wide of the far post.
This being the closest of chances left in the game, It meant that Makerere collected their first three (3) points of the campaign at home to go top of Group B above Kumi, Ndejje and Victoria University who lay bottom.
The UFL will continue tomorrow with a Group D tie between two-time champions Kampala University (KU) and Kampala International University (KIU) in Kibuli at 3pm.
