The FUFA Big League encounter between Kaaro Karungi FC and Kataka FC descended into controversy and was ultimately abandoned following a series of disputes at Kyamate Playground.

Kaaro Karungi appeared on course for a crucial home victory after Gideon Onyango’s first-half goal handed them a deserved lead heading into the latter stages of the match. However, the game took a dramatic turn in the 86th minute when Kataka FC equalised through Isaac Owiny.

The goal immediately sparked protests from Kaaro Karungi players, who argued that their goalkeeper had been fouled in the build-up. The situation escalated as players and members of the technical team staged a sit-down protest on the pitch, halting play for over 30 minutes.

Tensions had already been evident earlier in the match, with concerns raised regarding inadequate security arrangements at the venue, an issue that appeared to contribute to the breakdown in order.

When play eventually resumed, the controversy persisted. Kaaro Karungi thought they had regained the lead through Ronald Ahereza, but the goal was disputed by Kataka FC, triggering further protests. In response, Kataka’s technical bench reportedly instructed their players to walk off the pitch, effectively bringing the match to an end.

The outcome of the fixture now rests with the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA), with no official result recorded. Both teams and match officials are expected to submit detailed reports as part of the review process.

Under FUFA Competition Rules, particularly Rule 23(13), any team that refuses to continue play risks forfeiture of the match and potential disciplinary action. The final decision could therefore have significant implications beyond the pitch.

The stakes are high for both sides. Kaaro Karungi are fighting to avoid relegation, while Kataka FC remain in contention for promotion, making the abandoned fixture a potentially decisive moment in the season.

FUFA is expected to issue a ruling in the coming days.
