FIFA 2022 World Cup: Ghana, Cameroon lose in their Openers

Both Ghana and Cameroon suffered losses in their opening FIFA 2022 World Cup games on Thursday.

Cameroon lost to Switzerland 1-0 at the Al Janoub stadium while Ghana were defeated by Portugal 3-2 in a Group H thriller at Stadium 974.

Forward Breel Embolo who was born in the West African nation but moved to Switzerland at age six, scored the Swiss winner immediately after the break

In the group H thriller, Cristiano Ronaldo gave Portugal the lead from the spot in the 65th minute after being fouled by Mohammed Salisu but few minutes later,Andre Ayew equalized for Ghana against the run of play – firing in close range after brilliant work by Mohammad Kudus.

Portugal restored their lead soon afterwards through Joao Felix before the European side extended it further through substitute Rafael Leao. Both those goals were set-up by Bruno Fernandes.

In the 89th minute, Ghana pulled a goal back through Osman Bukari who headed home to give the African side some glimmer of hope.

With arguably the last action of the game, Ghana got a golden opportunity to salvage a point when Inaki Williams caught Portugal goalkeeper Diogo Costa unawares to steal possession in the box, but the forward lost his footing at the crucial moment hence Portugal took maximum points.

Ghana will play South Korea next on Monday while on the same day, Cameroon will battle Serbia.
