Diaspora: Fahad Bayo injured, another clean sheet for Kigonya – how Ugandan professional fared over the weekend


The footballing weekend comes with some disturbing news from Israel where Fahad Aziz Bayo scored for his team but got injured in the game. However, in Tanzania, former Bright Stars shot stopper Mathias Kigonya kept yet another clean sheet for his Azam FC side. Here is how Uganda Professionals performed with their respective clubs over the weekend.

Former Vipers SC forward, Fahad Aziz Bayo was on target in Ashdod SC and Hapoel Haifa 2-all draw at the Sammy Ofer Stadium. The Ugandan forward netted the opener in the 12th minute before Dean David doubled Ashdod’s lead three minutes later. However Hapoel rallied from the two goals deficit to secure a draw through Kapiloto and Itay Bogani goals. Ashdod has already secured a playoff place and now sit third on the log with 40 points in 25 games.

Still in the Israel Premier League, forward Luwagga Kizito started and played full-time as his side Hapoel Kfar Saba lost 2-1 to Beitar Jerusalem away from home. Hapoel Kfar has lost more games than any other side in the league and now sit at the bottom of the standings with 23 points.

In England, Uche Ikpeazu Mubiru returned to the starting lineup and helped his side Wycombe Wanderers secure a 1-0 victory over Preston North End FC in the English Championship. Defender Ryan Tafazolli scored the lone goal for the Chairboys. Another Ugandan, Jordan Obita was an unused substitute. With the win, Wycombe Wanderers stay bottom of the log with just 26 points in 36 games, nine below the relegation line.

Elvis Bwomono featured full-time for Southend FC who played out to a goalless stalemate with Stevenage in the English Football League Two

In Denmark, Moses Opondo was introduced in the 79th minute but couldn’t help his side, Odense Boldkub to any better result as they suffered a 3-0 loss to Brøndby in the Danish Superlig. Mikael Uhre netted the first hat-trick for Brondby in less than 20 minutes.

Still in the Danish Superliga, Robert Kakeeto never made the matchday squad as his side, AaB Aalborg claimed a 2-0 victory over Vejle BK. Tom van Weert opened the scoreline before left-back Jakob Ahlmann Nielsen doubled the advantage in the second half. Aalborg now sits seventh on the log with 28 points in 21 games.

In the Czech Republic, Edrisa Lubega didn’t make the matchday squad as his side, Pribram FK succumbed to a 5-0 loss to Banik in the Czech Republic First League.

In the Czech National Football league, Isaac Muleme was introduced in the 69th minute for Igor Súkenník and helped his side, Viktoria Zizkov rally from behind to defeat Vyšehrad. Daniel Stropek had opened the scoring for Vysehrad, but Marek Opluštil equalised with 15 minutes to go, before Josef Bazal stole all three for Zizkov. Zizkov stands 5th on the log with 7 wins and 6 loses in 14 games while Vysehrad are bottom with just 5 points

In Sweden, Ronald Mukiibi started and featured for 79 minutes as his side, Ostersunds suffered a 3-0 loss to Djurgården in the Svenska Cupen quarterfinals.

In Germany, Herbert Bockhorn started and featured 87 minutes for VfL Bochum as they suffered a 2-0 loss to Hamburger SV in the Bundesliga 2. Amadou Onana and Khaled Narey netted to propel Hamburger SV to within two points below Top placed VFL Bochum who are on 48 points.

In South Africa, Denis Onyango started in goal for Mamelodi Sundowns who claimed their ninth consecutive win in all Competitions coming from a goal down to defeat Stellenbosch 2-1 in the DStv Premiership. Gaston Sirino levelled matters after Stanley Dimgba had given Stellenbosch the lead in the first half. But, before the death, Peter Shalulile completed the comeback for Mamelodi.

On the other side of South Africa, Goalkeeper Ismael Watenga was on the bench as Chippa United FC claimed a 2-1 win at home against Richards Bay in the Nedbank cup quarterfinals. Chippa will face Maroka Swallows next on Saturday in the League.

In Tanzania, goalie Mathias Kigonya started in goal and kept yet another clean sheet for Azam FC as they claimed a 3-0 victory over Ihefu in the Vodafone Tanzanian Premier League. Ayoub Lyanga opened the scoring before a Nado brace secured all three for Azam FC. Azam now sits third on the log, behind Simba SC and Yanga with 44 points garnered in 24 games.

In Algeria, Allan Okello didn’t make it to the 18 man squad as his Paradou claimed a 2-1 win away at Hussein Dey.

In Vietnam, Moses Oloya played the entire game for Hanoi FC as they claimed a 2-0 win over Joseph Mpande’s Hai Phong.

In Egypt, Derrick Nsibambi was an unused substitute as his side, Smouha SC claimed a comprehensive 5-0 win over Aswan in the Egyptian Premier League. Both Ahmed Mohamed Abdel Kader Radwan and Hussein Hasan netted twice each to inspire Smouha to their 4th league win.
