Diaspora: Bayo on target, Mukiibi returns – how Ugandan pros fared over the weekend


This weekend saw Fahad Bayo netting the only goal for Ashdod SC in their Israeli Premier League game, while Ronald Mukiibi finally returned from injury in Ostersund’s loss in Sweden. This is how Ugandan professionals fared over the weekend.

Starting off in England, Ugandan forward Uche Ikpeazu Mubiru was introduced in the 73rd minute for Andraz Sporar as Middlesbrough FC defeated Swansea 1-0 in the English Championship.

In Denmark, Moses Opondo was a second-half substitute for Odense Boldkub as they claimed a 2-0 victory over Randers FC in the Danish Cup.

In Scotland, Bevis Mugabi featured full-time for Motherwell FC as they drew 1-all with Hibernian in the Scottish Premiership.

In Sweden, Ronald Mukiibi returned from injury as Ostersunds lost 1-0 to Degerfors FC in the Swedish Allsvenskan. Mukiibi played the last 14 minutes of the game while his counterpart, Isaac Ssewakambo never made the matchday squad.

In Portugal, Edrisa Lubega was still out injured as his side, Estrella Da Amadora lost 4-1 to Nacional in Portuguese LigaPro.

In Israeli, Fahad Bayo netted the only goal of the game as Ashdod SC defeated Maccabi Petach Tikva in the Israeli Premier League. Timothy Awanyi played full-time for Ashdod.

Kizito Luwagga featured for halftime as  him and his Hapoel NoF suffered a 4-0 defeat to Maccabi Haifa.

In South Africa, Former Uganda Cranes skipper Denis Onyango was out suspended as Mamelodi Sundowns drew 1-all with Stellenbosch in the DSTV Premiership.

Moses Waiswa Ndondi was an unused substitute for Supersport United as they lost 0-1 to Sekhuhune United while Ismail Watenga didn’t make it to the matchday squad as Chippa United lost 2-1 to Golden Arrows.

In Germany, Herbert Bockhorn was unused for VFL Bochum as they secured a 3-2 victory over Augsburg in the Germany Bundesliga.

In Kenya, Bashir Sekagya featured full-time and kept a clean sheet for Wazito FC as they defeated Ulinzi Stars 1-0.

In Zambia, Keziron Kizito featured for 78 minutes as Buildcon drew goalless with Kansashi in the MTN Zambian Premier League.

In Swaziland, Bashir Mutanda featured 80 minutes for Mbabane Swallows as they defeated Manzini Sea Birds 2-1 in the Swazi Premier league.

In the CAF Confederation Cup, Taddeo Lwanga was absent as Simba SC lost 2-1 to Red Arrows to qualify to the group stages after a 4-2 aggregate victory. Simba won the first leg 3-0 a week ago. Goalkeeper Yasin Mugabi was an unused substitute for Red Arrows.

Fred Nkata also featured for Gor Mahia as they drew 1-all with Otoho to exit the tournament after a 2-1 aggregate loss over two legs.

Deogracious Ojok was also absent for Tusker as they also crashed out of the CAF Confederation Cup, losing 1-0 to CS Sfaxien in the second leg.

Another Ugandan, Joseph Ochaya was unused for TP Mazembe as they secured the much needed goalless stalemate with Gallants to qualify to the group stages of the CAF Confederation Cup after a 1-0 aggregate victory.

In Rwanda, Emmanuel Okwi scored his first goal for his new side Kiyovu Sports Club as they beat rivals Rayon Sports 2-0 in Rwanda Primus League. Okwi was on target in the 63rd minute to double his side’s lead.
