City oilers extended their National Basketball League title winning momentum to a record 10th time on Wednesday evening.
This followed a 64:51 game four win against KIU titans to stamp the biggest club dominance in Uganda’s sporting history with sweep style.
This also guarantees Oilers as Uganda’s representative at the next Basketball League Africa (BAL) for a fourth consecutive time.
The Titans who were last season’s losing finalists defeated Oilers’ recent rivals Namuwongo blazers in the semis seemed to be a no match for record champions, they failed to win a single game over the best of seven series and non of their 70:61, 70:65 and 72:70 prior defeats extended into overtime.
For some, this looked like the season Oilers’ dominance would be broken after Monday Juruni, the man who coached them to all the nine titles left for Rwanda’s Kepler University before the season started, his long time assistant Andrew Tendo stepped in as head coach with club veteran Ben Komakech as his assistant but also doubled as a player, this partnership finished top of the table in regular season.
Komakech was called into action more often than planned after the departure of the clubs key players Jimmy Enabu, Tonny Drilleba, and James Okello in the middle of the season.
And heading into the playoffs, one of their best performers in regular season was sidelined with match fixing charges and an injury to one of their former winning squad members Mooses Maker meant more disaster for the team.
But oilers knew the right digits to dial, they called onto American, Petty Parrish who had played for the team at the previous Basketball Africa League.
And he emerged as their top performer entering double digits for all but game 3 finals game when he was taken off injured.
The League’s best performers were also awarded on the night with Oilers’ Titus Lual emerging as the MVP.
The top scorer was Peter Cheng from Nam Blazers, Best three point shooter was Tembo Kasereka of KIU Titans, Titus Lual of City Oilers the best defensive player and Kampala Rockets’ Pauti Ozias Kikomba the Top Rebounder
The League’s Best five; Joel Lukoji, Kasereka Tembo, Peter Cheng, Titus Lual, Pauti Ozias Kikomba.
