Rebecca Cheptegei: Ugandan marathoner passes on

Uganda’s Marathon Olympic athlete Rebecca Cheptegei has passed on after suffering extremely severe burns after a domestic disagreement .

The marathoner had been doused with petrol and set on fire after a disagreement over a piece of land with her boyfriend-Dickson Ndiema in Eldoret, Kenya only for her body to suffer 75% burns.

Unfortunately, Rebecca lost her life at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret, Kenya where she had been admitted earlier on Sunday.

“Good morning colleagues, very sad news Rebecca Cheptegei passed on this morning.”

“May her soul rest in peace. We keep her family and the UAF family in our prayers and thoughts at this time.” Dr Donald Rukare, the Uganda Olympic Committee President confirmed her death

Cheptegei ran in the women’s marathon at last month’s Paris Olympic Games alongside teammates, Stella Chesang and Mercyline Chelangat, finishing in 48th place. 

She took part in the 2021 World Mountain and Trail Running Championships in Chiang Mai, Thailand held in 2022, winning gold in the Up and downhill race.
