CECAFA U-20 tournament: Rwanda pulls out of regional AFCON qualifiers

Rwanda has decided they will not to take part in this year’s CECAFA  U-20 tournament.

The development has been confirmed in a statement released by Fédération Rwandaise de Football Association (FERWAFA) on Saturday after consultative discussions between the Country’s Sports Ministry and the Ministry of Education.

“After a long time in the break due to the COVID-19, schools have just re-opened and the students can’t miss school for the competition. Most of the U-20 players are students who need to be in school,” read part of the press statement.

The U-20 tournament that also serves as the AFCON U-20 qualifiers, will be hosted in Tanzania between November 22nd and December 6th.

Rwanda’s withdraw from the tournament leaves group A with only three teams (Tanzania, Somalia and Djibouti).

Uganda was pitted in group B alongside Burundi, Eritrea and South Sudan.

Tanzania are the reigning champions, having beaten Kenya 1-0 in finals last year  at the FUFA technical Center, Njeru.

This us how the groups are Groups currently.

Group A: Tanzania, Somalia, Djibouti

Group B: Burundi, Eritrea, South Sudan, Uganda

Group C: Ethiopia, Kenya, Sudan
