The opening day of the Great Lakes Men’s T20 at Lugogo Cricket Oval produced two contrasting but thrilling encounters, with Bunyonyi Warriors inspired by Anas Baig’s fluent half-century securing a composed morning victory before Kyoga Avengers edged a Super Over classic in the afternoon.

In the morning fixture, Victoria Strikers opted to bat first but failed to build sustained partnerships. Early wickets of Simon Ssesazi (12), Perry Wazombe (20), and Robert Ajuna (0) left them under pressure.

Kenneth Waiswa injected momentum with a rapid 24 off 9 balls, striking four boundaries and a six.

Christopher Kidega (17) and Jaffer Ochaya (18) offered support, while Emmanuel Twijukye’s unbeaten 13 helped push the Strikers to 116 for 9 in their 20 overs.

Bunyonyi’s bowling unit was led by a brilliant spell from Gurjivan Singh, who claimed four wickets and consistently broke key partnerships. He received strong support from Jonathan Nyiiro and Tendo Rayan, who also chipped in with important breakthroughs.

In reply, Bunyonyi Warriors suffered an early setback with the loss of Obuya Robinson for just 1. However, Anas Baig anchored the chase with a superb 53 off 36 balls, hitting four fours and three sixes.

Fred Achelam added 22, while Kyewuta Cosmas finished the job in style with an unbeaten 29 off 10 balls as Bunyonyi reached 118 for 5 in 16.3 overs.

Despite Perry Wazombe’s two wickets for 15 runs, the target proved insufficient.

Gurjivan Singh’s all-round impact, highlighted by his four-wicket haul, earned him the Player of the Match award as Bunyonyi opened their campaign with a strong win.

The afternoon encounter between Mburo Blasters and Kyoga Avengers turned into a high-scoring spectacle filled with momentum swings and late drama. Mburo Blasters, after choosing to bat first, posted 176 all out in 19.4 overs.

Fahad Mutagana (42 off 19) and Charles Musemeza (25 off 17) provided a flying start, while Riazat Ali Shah added 31 off 19 deliveries.

Useful contributions from Suleman Sharif (19) and Steven Wabwose (19) kept the innings competitive, but Kyoga struck regularly at the death. Olipa Gerald led the bowling effort with three wickets to restrict further damage.

Kyoga Avengers responded with intent from the outset. Ronald Lutaaya (24) and Cyrus Kakuru (37) laid the foundation before Robert Owili produced a stunning counterattack, smashing 45 off just 20 balls to swing the chase.

Junaid Khan (25) and Ismail Munir (23*) kept the innings alive as the game went down to the final over.

Mburo’s bowlers fought hard, with Hamid Munigwa taking three wickets and Sowobi Yunus claiming two, but Kyoga matched the 176 total, finishing 176 for 10 after 20 overs to force a Super Over.

In the Super Over, Kyoga Avengers held their nerve to outlast Mburo Blasters in a tense finish, sealing one of the most dramatic wins of the tournament so far.

Robert Owili’s explosive innings proved decisive and earned him the Player of the Match award in a contest defined by twists and late drama.
