2023 Rugby Africa Sevens: Uganda advances to Quaterfinal stage

The Uganda Rugby Sevens advanced to the Rugby Africa Sevens Quarterfinal stage despite losing their third group game against the hosts of Zimbabwe.

With the boys having their eyes set on defending their title after winning it last year (2022) at the Kyadondo Rugby Club in Kampala, this was enough motivation to start the tournament with a great 45-07 win over Algeria on Saturday morning in Harare – Zimbabwe.

Philip Wokorach was on fire as he converted on six occasions with Pius Ogena, Nobert Okeny, Aaron Ofoyrwoth, Adrian Kasito, Mubarak Wandera all touching down and Alex Aturinda on two occasions.

In their second game, Uganda continued their Winning streak as they humbled Burkina Faso 36-19 but only to later on lose to the hosts of Zimbabwe 35-05.

Therefore Uganda finished second in Pool C and this helped the side qualify for the Quaterfinals.

1. Zimbabwe-8points 

2. Uganda-7 points 

3. Burkina Faso-6 points 

4. Algeria-3 points 

Uganda will take on Zambia on Day 2 (Sunday 17th September)in the 3rd quarter final at 10:44am (EAT).

The winner of the take home the crown and also directly qualify for the Paris 2024 Olympics while the second and third-placed teams will qualify for the final repechage tournament set for June 2024 where one more team will seal the last Olympics slot.

The top two teams (excluding SA) will qualify for the 2024 World Rugby Challenger Series, which serves as a pathway to HSBC World Sevens Series qualification/return.
