Victor Kiplangat has won Uganda’s first medal at the 2022 Commonwealth games in Birmingham.

The 22-year old ran fastest in the Marathon to scoop gold on Saturday after posting 2:10:55.

He beat off Tanzania’s Alfred Simba, who clocked 2:12:29 to win silver and Kenya’s Michael Githae (2:13:16) who won bronze.

This is Uganda’s first Gold medal in the Marathon at the games. Solomon Mutai came closest in 2018 when he finished second at the Games in Gold Coast, Australia.

Uganda will be hoping for more gold medals at this year’s games in order to surpass their ever highest tally, which was set in 2018 when the nation won three gold medals. Two of them came from Joshua Cheptegei in the 5000m and 10,000m races.
