2021 CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup: Provisional Uganda U23 squad named

The head coach of Uganda U23 team Morley Byekwaso has named a provisional 40-man squad to start preparation for the 2021 CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup in Ethiopia.

The squad consists of some players that featured at the 2021 AFCON U20 finals in Mauritania early this year. It also consists of five senior experiences players above the 23 years of age as  the tournament allows use of three senior players for any team

The senior players named among the 40 include Ismail Watenga, Charles Lukwago, Yunus Sentamu, Murushid Juuko and Saidi Kyeyune.

The 40-man contingent will enter residential camp at the Cranes Paradise Hotel, Kisaasi on Friday 18th June 2021.

A final 23-player squad will be named before the team travels to Ethiopia for the tournament.

The CECAFA Cup, founded in 1926 is the oldest football tournament in Africa and is organized by the Council for East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA). Ethiopia will host the 2021 edition of the CECAFA which is due July 3 – 18 in Bahir Dar.

CECAFA members agreed that the 2021 Challenge Cup shall be played by the U-23 age category and all Member Associations to contribute US$20,000 which will help the hosts meet some of the costs.

Uganda is the defending champion of the CECAFA after their 3-0 triumph over Eritrea in December 2019 in Kampala.
