Yan Diomande has been named the 2025/26 Bundesliga Rookie of the Season after a sensational breakthrough campaign with RB Leipzig.

The 19-year-old winger beat off competition from Luka Vušković of Hamburger SV and Ibrahim Maza of Bayer Leverkusen to claim one of German football’s most prestigious young player awards.

Diomande’s rise has been one of the standout stories of the Bundesliga season, with the young Ivorian playing a crucial role in Leipzig’s return to UEFA Champions League football.

The winger finished his debut Bundesliga campaign with 12 goals and eight assists in 33 appearances, establishing himself as one of the most dangerous young attackers in Europe.

According to Bundesliga statistics, Diomande attempted more dribbles than any other player in the division and also won more one-on-one duels than any other Bundesliga player during the season.

His explosive pace, direct attacking style, and relentless work ethic quickly made him a fan favourite at Leipzig and one of the league’s most feared wide players.

“The manner in which he keeps the opposition on their toes, tracks back and runs at players — it’s a pretty complete package,” Leipzig head coach Ole Werner said earlier this season. “He’s a top character, a good lad and an extraordinary talent.”

The award follows Diomande’s impressive performances throughout the campaign, where he also secured multiple Rookie of the Month honours alongside fellow nominees Vušković and Maza.

Vušković enjoyed an impressive season with Hamburg, collecting four Rookie of the Month awards, while Maza emerged as one of Leverkusen’s brightest young midfield talents after his move from Hertha Berlin.

The Bundesliga Rookie of the Season award is determined through a combined voting process involving fans, Bundesliga clubs, and selected football experts. Fan votes contribute 40 percent, while clubs and experts each account for 30 percent of the final result.

To qualify for the award, players must be under 23 years old at the start of the season and must not have previously established themselves as regular Bundesliga starters.

Diomande now succeeds Michael Olise, who won the award last season after his impressive debut campaign with Bayern Munich.

For African football supporters, Diomande’s breakthrough represents another major success story for emerging talent from the continent competing at the highest level of European football.

The teenager is also expected to play an important role for the Ivory Coast national football team ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup following his remarkable rise in Germany.

With Champions League football secured and one of Europe’s top young talents continuing to develop rapidly, Leipzig supporters will be hoping Diomande’s remarkable debut season is only the beginning.
