Victoria Pearls flagged off to Entebbe ahead of the ICC Women T20I World Cup Qualifiers


Uganda Women Cricket National team, Victoria Pearls were flagged off to Entebbe ahead of the ICC Women T20I World Cup qualifiers.

The Ladies will be looking to qualify for the Global Women’s World Cup qualifiers in a few days at the Entebbe Cricket Oval.

The team will be seeking achieve the same success they did in 2017 in Namibia with a circle of six players who are now present in the final 14 named by head coach, Lawrence Ssematimba.

Kevin Aweko, Rita Musamali, Consy Aweko, Janet Mbabazi, Stephanie Nampiina and Immaculate Nakisuyi are six players who were in Namibia for 2017 with hope that they can carry their experience to the new gêneration players.

In the team, Uganda will expect to get some energy from the two 16 year old youngsters in Lorna Anyait and Malisa Ariokot who made their senior debuts at the 29th Kwibuka tournament in Kigali, Rwanda.

In a press conference held at the NCS Arena in Lugogo before the flag off, Team Captain Consy Aweko came out to say that it was time for the team to execute;

“As a team we have a lot in hand just like we have a lot to showcase starting from today till the day we are playing the finals”

“The training has been effective and believe we are going to execute because our coaches and management have done a lot for us to showcase the best.” she concluded

A thankful Lawrence Ssematimba the Victoria Pearls head coach, also came out to hail the team preparations with help of the Uganda Cricket Association;

“We have a great group of players, I would like to thank the Uganda Cricket Association for being intentional about our preparations this year”

“The girls got contracts in March this year and that was in preparation for this tournament not forgetting the three tournaments that helped us prepare against some sides that are coming to Kampala.” Ssematimba added

“We have prepared well and I am sure if we do our basics right we shall be able to qualify for the Globals” he concluded

Uganda is placed in Group B alongside Namibia, Rwanda and Nigeria.

They will start their campaign on Sunday 9th Against Rwanda, Namibia on Tuesday and Nigeria on Thursday. All games will be at the Entebbe Cricket Oval at 13:50 hours East Africa time.
