UPL: KCCA edge URA in season opener

The 2024/25 Uganda Premier League season officially kicked off in style with a full MTN Omondi stadium in Lugogo, Kampala as the hosts Kampala Capital City Authority Football  (KCCA FC) edged Uganda Revenue Authority (URA FC) 1-0.

The only goal of the game was scored by midfielder Saidi Mayanja placing a low ball past former KCCA shot stopper Derrick Ochan who was between the poles for URA.

In a game that started with high intensity, the visitors had a bright start to the game something that created problems to the hosts.

However KCCA got a quick counter attack when Etienne Katenga ran down the right flank only to deliver a over hit cross-in before it was recycled and handed to midfielder Joel Sserunjogi who had a shot blocked.

A few seconds later, Norman Namanya was cautioned after that inflicting some pain on Left back James Mubezi .

In the 15th minute, URA got the chance to take  35 yard free-kick after Hassan Muhamud brought down a free dribbling Godfrey Ssekibengo however it went over the bar.

During the game, both teams were given a short water break but immediately after restart Saidi Mayanja was the man of the moment after he netted the League’s first goal this season in the 29th minute.

Towards the end of first half, Namanya forced a save from goalkeeper Mugolofa with a long range shot from outside the area.

In the second half, URA made a quick change to bring on Bruno Bunyaga in place of Sheen Kimbowa while KCCA brought in Harunah Lukwago for Sharif Ssengendo who didn’t have a good half at all.

This second stanza was a Bright Anukani show   on the KCCA bend after he forced a save from goalie Ochan and the rebound from Derrick Nsibambi who also managed link play very well fused.

Haruna Lukwago was other player on the shine making constant forward runs to deliver crosses, action that forced URA to make a triple change that included Joseph Ssemujju who had a assignment to keep Lukwago in his half.

The other two players that were brought in at the half hour mark were George Masembe and Faizo Matovu.

66 minutes on the clock, Nsibambi headed into the left bottom corner of the goal to force a save out of Ochan from a Lukwago’s cross.

Towards the end Joseph Ssemujju forced a save out of goalkeeper Mugolofa to execute a save from Joseph Ssemujju’s long range shot.

At the end, it finished 1-0 with KCCA keeping the maximum points at home.

In their next games, KCCA will take on BUL at the Lugazi stadium in Najjembe on 20th September 2024 while URA will visit Soltilo Bright Stars in Kavumba.
