Uganda Gazelles 2023 AfroBasket Dream Shattered by Egypt


The Uganda National Women’s Basketball team, the Gazelles have failed to qualify for the 2023 AfroBasket finals in Rwanda

This is after they fell 74-65 to Egypt in a FIBA Zone V Championship final on Sunday at Lugogo

Uganda, who needed a just a win to qualify for their third continental showpiece failed to win any of the four quarters. They lost the first one by one point (20-19) before also losing the second one by the same score line to go into the break trailing by two points.

Going into the last quarter, Uganda trailed by six points (58-53) before consequentialy losing the game by nine points.

Brenda Ekone led the two teams with 25 points, but this proved not enough to steer Uganda to victory. Jannon Otto also had 14 points and 10 rebounds for Uganda on losing effort.

Egypt were led to victory by Raneen Elgedawy who posted a double-double of 19 points and 12 rebounds while Deghady Soraya and Radwa Salem had 11 and 16 points each.

By the end of the day, Egypt exerted sweet revenge on Uganda who had beaten them 86-85 a few days ago during the round-robin games.
