UBCL: Lukanga BC dominate the first round


The first ever edition of the Uganda Boxing Champions League kicked off on Saturday 4th December, 2021 at the MTN Arena in Lugogo with the semi-professional fights.

Lukanga Boxing Club who had the highest number of participants had the best performers of the day as four from the club managed to win their opening bouts.

In the first ever fight, Kalema Joseph from COPAB Boxing Club defeated Lumbuye Gilbert of Kiwatule Boxing club on a Unanimous decision in the 48kgs minimum category.

It was the bout in the fly-weight category that proved to be the most entertaining and overwhelming with Gulu Boxing Club’s Geoffrey Ochan defeated Zebra Boxing Club’s Stuart Ssenoga by split decision.

The judges scored 4-1 in favor of Ochan.

In the Bantam 54kgs Weight Category, Lukanga’s Mugerwa defeated Patrick Kasozi ( Bwaise BC) after a 3-2 spit-decision.

In the 57kgs Feather-weight, a rebirth of a long-time battle was finely-posed as Jonah Kyobe ( Lukanga) went up against his former teammate Marvin Ssali ( Zebra BC).

Kyobe came out on top after winning 3-2 by split decision.

Adinan Yasin was to feature in the Light-weight category but his opponent Hassan Habib did not appear due to fever, while also Siriro Pius from Sparks Boxing Club didn’t appear to face up against Kimera Edward of Kalinabili Boxing Club.

Kibira Owen from Lukanga defeated Nvule Umar in the Welterweight Category and Kassujja Richard also from Lukanga won his bout against Ssemuddu Muzamir of Kololo Boxing Club.

All in All, day one of the Boxing Champions League saw two knockouts being registered all in first rounds.

Ronald Okello knocked down IGA Rashid in the middleweight category while Kayiwa Lawrence knocked down Mutebi Medi from Zebra boxing club.

The winners of each bout were awarded with three points.

The Champions League will return on December 18th with the second round.
