In a groundbreaking turn of events, Mukono Cricket Community scripted history with their first-ever victory in the ongoing Under 18 Girls Interhub Tournament at St Joseph’s College Layibi in Gulu city.
Mbwali Naume emerged as the star player, scoring a remarkable half-century as Mukono chased down Northerns Cricket Hub’s total of 114.
Since its establishment in 2020, Mukono Cricket Community had yet to secure a win in any competition, making this triumph all the more historic.
The victory not only marks a significant milestone for the team but signals the dawn of an era characterized by success and achievement.
Both Mukono Cricket Community and Northerns Cricket Hub entered this match following losses in their respective opening games – Northerns to East Enders and Mukono Cricket Community to Soroti Cricket Academy B.
Labong Helen Yaya, the captain for Northerns Cricket Hub, won the toss and elected to bat first, contributing 24 off 30. Teammate Nabulime Giringish added 32 off 37, allowing Northerns to post a commanding total.
In response, Mukono’s Nyesigire Sandra stood out as the only bowler to pick up wickets, claiming 2 after bowling 4 overs.
Naume opened the batting for Mukono, played a pivotal role with a score of 54 off 45. Captain Naula Hasifa contributed 13 off 20, leading Mukono to seal the historic victory in the 15th over with 7 wickets in hand.
This triumphant moment has brought excitement to the entire community, marking a new winning momentum for the team.
However, it is crucial to note that this achievement does not deviate from the core aim of participating in the tournament – to enhance skills application and game awareness.
Reflecting on last year’s tour to the Northern hub where Mukono Cricket Community faced a 3-0 loss, this recent victory symbolizes a remarkable turnaround for the girls’ team.
Looking ahead, Mukono Cricket Community is set to face SCA A in the afternoon, while Northerns Cricket Hub will take on Soroti Cricket Academy B in the morning. The journey continues, and the momentum is building for Mukono Cricket Community.
