Burundi seal their place in the 2022 CECAFA Women’s championship final to join the Uganda Crested Cranes at the FUFA Technical Centre, Njeru.
The Burundians came from behind to win the game 2-1 through goals from captain Aisha Djafari and Sandra Niyonkuru. The only goal for the Twiga stars was scored by their leading goal scorer Opa Clement.
In the game before, Fazila Ikwaput saved the Crested Cranes from shame against a resistant Ethiopia to head to the final of the 2022 CECAFA Women’s Championship
In a tightly contested semi-final, Ikwaput scored her only goal of the game in the 114th minute of extra-time. However close the game was, Uganda got a couple opportunities, hitting the crossbar four times.
Uganda’s Sandra Nabweteme and Shamirah Nalugya all came close in the first half before Coach Lutalo was forced into making a change after Aisha Nantongo was taken off to be replaced by Lukia Namubiru.
In the second stanza Lutalo made more changes bringing on Lilian Mutuuzo, Phiona Nabbumba and Sheebah Zalwango for Nalugya, Joan Nabirye and Margaret Kunihira.
The extra-time looked a bit balanced though Ethiopia had more chances. With five minutes left to the end the second half of extra time, the Crested Cranes got a corner that was brought into the box by Hasifah Nassuna for her fellow top scorer in the FUFA women’s Super League.
The Cranes will face Burundi in the final on Saturday and It should be noted that Burundi and Uganda faced off in the Group stages with the Crested Cranes winning 4-1.
