StarTimes UPL: Manzoki, Karisa on target as Vipers get off campaign to winning start

Four-time Uganda Premier league champions Vipers got their 2021/22 campaign off to a brilliant start with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Police FC at the MTN Omondi Stadium, Lugogo.

Forwards Milton Karisa and Cesar Manzoki netted the important goals to ensure the Venoms got their first victory of the season.

The Cops were the better side of the early exchanges but Tony Mawejje and Muwadda Mawejje failed to put the ball past Vipers goalkeeper Fabien Mutombora on two brilliant occasions.

Vipers first realistic attempt on target came after 27 minutes but Tom Ikara was brilliant to save Bobosi Byaruhanga’s shot.

The Venoms did take the lead in the 38th minute through Milton Karisa who got onto the end of Bright Anukani’s pass to nich in a sweet shot into the back of the net.

The game went into the break with the visitors slightly ahead.

Three minutes from the restart, Police almost grabbed an equaliser but Mutombora did well to get the ball off Brian Mululi’s head.

Vipers doubled their lead in the 58th minute as Manzoki hit a first-time shot that caught Ikara unaware after Paul Willa’s pass.

The highlight of the game came in the 76th minute after Mawejje suffered a nasty head injury following a head-on contact with Willa.

Angolan forward Nelito Taveres was also handed his debut and replaced the goalscorer Manzoki.

The game ended 2-0, the same scoreline that happened in the Stanbic Uganda Cup semifinal last month with Vipers still victorious.

Vipers will host Wakiso Giants at the St. Mary’s Stadium, Kitende in their second league game while Police FC will visit BUL FC who are yet to play a matchday one fixture on Friday, October 22.
